NewseumWhen the Newseum opened in spring 2008 -- as a 250,000-square-foot museum of news -- it offered visitors an experience that blends five centuries of news history with up-to-the-second technology and hands-on exhibits. There is no other museum in world that allows so much hands on access and behind the scene views of the very way we exchange information and stories everyday.

The Newseum is located at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Sixth Street, N.W., Washington, D.C., on America's Main Street between the White House and the U.S. Capitol and adjacent to the Smithsonian museums on the National Mall. The exterior's unique architectural features include a 74-foot-high marble engraving of the First Amendment and an immense front wall of glass through which passers-by are able to watch the museum fulfilling its mission of providing a forum where the media and the public can gain a better understanding of each other. A few of the features include the Berlin Wall, the top of the South twin tower, a news helicopter, interactive games like 'morals in newspaper reporting' and 'You become the photographer' as well as a Green screen newscast report, where you become the reporter! Download your newscast and send to all of your friends!

The Newseum features seven levels of galleries, theaters. It offers a unique environment that takes museum-goers behind the scenes to experience how and why news is made.

mt vernonTravel back in time to the eighteenth century – to the life and times of the father of our country, George Washington.

A motor coach will take you over the Potomac River to Mount Vernon Estate, America’s most visited historic house. The estate sits on a grassy, shaded slope overlooking the Potomac River. Upon arrival you will pass thru the newest additions to the estate: The Ford Orientation Center and Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center. The exhibits depict Washington as an incomparable American hero who evolved from a young man of modest means into this country’s first and greatest president.

From the visitor’s center, you will make your way along the garden path to Washington’s home, where you will be presented with an authentic look at the life of George and Martha Washington. Docents will describe the rich history and significant historical events that took place in each of the bright and colorful rooms in the mansion. From there, you will tour the outbuildings where much of the day-to-day domestic activity on the plantation took place – from the curing, spinning and laundry houses to the living quarters for overseers and slaves. The plantation gardens will demonstrate firsthand why Washington was considered the foremost horticulturist of his day. As you venture down the pathway, you will see the tombs where George and Martha Washington are buried along with other family members. Throughout your visit, you will observe the beautiful landscape that has been carefully and meticulously groomed for decades.

Space is limited. There is no charge for this event. Event is sponsored by BP Products North America.
Please check in at Gaylord Bus Loop at 9:45am

white house chef tourA special event has been arranged at the Daughters of the American Revolution National Headquarters. Enjoy a unique luncheon with our White House Chef, taste food that was prepared for special events at theWhite House, and hear the Chef's stories of these events and functions.

Our special event is presented by Walter Scheib (White House Executive Chef, 1994 - 2005):"For the last eleven years, I have had the honor of doing daily what most chefs would be lucky to do once in their life time. That honor was serving the First Family of the United States."

As Walter demonstrates some of the popular appetizers he has prepared in his career at the White House everyone will have the opportunity to taste his creations. During lunch, Walter will take the opportunity to speak with guests. At dessert , he will continue his presentation and open it up to questions while guests can mill about and enjoy the view. Docents of the Daughters of the American Revolution will be available to anyone interested in the history of this beautiful building and the DAR.

Walter Scheib has quite a story to tell. In fact, he has two stories to tell. The first involves the rise of an American chef to the most storied position in the land. The second offers an intimate, human view of two First Families, the corridors of political power, international personalities, and the most famous building in the United States, from a unique vantage point: The kitchen. His culinary creations dazzled and delighted White House guests including Nelson Mandela, Emperor Aikihito, Jacques Chirac, Boris Yeltsin, Vaclav Havel, Lady Diana Spencer, Tony Blair, Vicente Fox, and others, not to mention the thousands of congressional members, journalists, and other House visitors.

Scheib has appeared on the CBS Early Show, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Good Morning America, Weekend Today in New York, Nightline and Iron Chef on the Food Network Station. He is the co-author of the newly published White House Chef: Eleven Years, Two Presidents, One Kitchen, which was released in January 2007.
